Launch of book on Wick­low wood­peck­ers

DE­CLAN Mur­phy launches his book ‘A Life in the Trees’ at the Glen­dalough Ho­tel on Thurs­day, Septem­ber 28, at 7.30 p.m.. The event is be­ing hosted by Pat Casey TD. The for­ward to the book was writ­ten by Wick­low based film di­rec­tor John Boor­man, who is ex­pected to at­tend the launch.

Var­i­ous coun­cil­lors, Her­itage of­fi­cers have also been in­vited to the launch as the book was part fi­nanced through the Na­tional Parks and Wildlife Ser­vice.

The book is De­clan’s per­sonal ac­count, based on the day to day ob­ser­va­tions, of a fam­ily of wood­peck­ers nest­ing in a Span­ish Ch­est­nut tree in the Wick­low Moun­tains.

De­clan was one of the small band who scoured the Wick­low oak­woods for nest­ing Great Spot­ted Wood­peck­ers in 2009 to prove the species had set­tled in the Re­pub­lic.

In ad­di­tion to the for­ward be­ing writ­ten by John Boor­man, il­lus­tra­tions were pro­vided by in­ter­na­tion­ally renowned bird artist, Kil­lian Mullar­ney. Re­fresh­ments and en­ter­tain­ment will also be pro­vided at the launch.
