Im­pres­sive Avondale over­come St Mary’s

Avondale CC 6-13, St Mary’s Col­lege Ark­low 5-4: This Girls Se­nior foot­ball A semi-fi­nal was played in Bal­li­nakill on Mon­day of last week.

Avondale had the as­sis­tance of a strong wind in the first half and used it to the full with some fine scores.

St Mary’s had plenty of chances but found scor­ing dif­fi­cult with their only score com­ing in the last minute of the half. At half time Avondale led by 4-9 to 1-0.

St Mary’s put up a much bet­ter per­for­mance in the sec­ond half. They did add four goals and re­duced the mar­gin to eight points at one stage but Avondale re­asserted in the fi­nal stages to add a fur­ther 1-1 for a well de­served win.

Ref­eree was Eddie Leonard (St Pa­trick’s).

Kerri Ann Mur­phy was out­stand­ing for the win­ners and scored 2-8 while Lau­ren Carter added 2-2.

Oth­ers to im­press for Avondale in­cluded goal­keeper Aoife Red­mond, full back Natalie Far­rell and Ava Carter.

St Mary’s had fine play­ers in Aoib­hinn and Roisin Stone, goal­keeper Eve Rogers and Liodán Ka­vanagh.

Avondale will now meet St Kevin’s CC Dunlavin in the semi fi­nal.

Ark­low Schools 5-8, St David’s Grey­stones 1-2: The semi-fi­nal of the Se­nior hurl­ing B cham­pi­onship took place in Pearse’s park on Thurs­day.

Ark­low looked the bet­ter team from the mo­ment ref­eree Pat Hickey got the game un­der­way and went on to lead by 2-6 to 1-0 at half time.

St David’s had more pos­ses­sion in the sec­ond half but came up against a strong Ark­low de­fence. Ark­low will now play West Wicklow Schools in the B fi­nal.

There were some fine hurlers on both sides with Owen Dor­gan, Aaron O’Dwer Robinson and Neil Browne to the fore for David’s while Shane Mel­lon did well for much of the game for Ark­low with Dy­lan Fur­long and Quentin O’Reilly also im­press­ing. Le­in­ster Ju­ve­nile foot­ball

Scoil Chonglais Balt­in­glass 5-13, Bless­ing­ton CC 2-2: A strong Scoil Chonglais team qual­i­fied to rep­re­sent Wicklow in the Le­in­ster ju­ve­nile D foot­ball cham­pi­onship with a con­vinc­ing win in Bless­ing­ton.

The win­ners led by 3-9 to 0-1 at half time. Bless­ing­ton were much im­proved in the sec­ond half with­out ever look­ing like bridg­ing the gap.

In the play off for third place Avondale CC beat Co­laiste Chraobh Ab­hann Kil­coole by 7-5 to 1-8. Other re­sults
