Tinahely triumph in GAA golfing war

Wicklow People (West Edition) - - SPORT - Inter-club Challenge

COOLLATTIN Golf Club’s first GAA Interclub Challenge turned out to be a wonderful success and great fun.

“This interclub challenge is Coollattin’s way of showing their appreciation to local GAA clubs who have chosen Coollattin as a venue for their fundraising classics in the past,” said a spokesperson for the golf club.

The teams were made up of members of the local GAA clubs. Some of them were golfers, some were non-golfers, some were members of Coollattin Golf Club and some were net.

The format was that teams started out on their first hole and one person was eliminated on each hole.

The winner was the last person standing.

“It proved to be an exciting and fun filled event which we hope to develop and grow in the coming years.,” said the spokesperson.

The semi-final pairings saw Carnew Emmets take on neighbours Shillelagh in what was a tough battle as expected while the golfers of Coolboy took on the might of Tinahely.

Carnew and Tinahely were the finalists with Tinahely claiming the title after a very exciting playoff between the very capable Damien Osborne of Carnew and the impressive Tom Memery from Tinahely.

The Interclub Perpetual Shield was presented by Captain Kevin Stapleton Snr to Stephen Nolan of Tinahely.

The Lady Captain Caroline Browne presented four green fees to each of the clubs who participated.

“We are already looking forward to next year,” they said.

A quick break for a photo and then straight back to the golf.

It might look innocent enough but the GAA rivalry was never far from the surface.

All smiles but al leyes were on the prize at the same time.

Laurence Behan lets it rip.
