Plan to erect 11 CCTV cam­eras around town

THE town of Ark­low could soon be a safer place to live, work and shop as it moves ever-closer to se­cur­ing a CCTV sys­tem through­out the town cen­tre as the Ark­low Town Team pre­pares to make a fund­ing ap­pli­ca­tion.

A map de­tail­ing pro­posed lo­ca­tions for 11 cam­eras was re­leased to the pub­lic to­day (Wed­nes­day) and will be on dis­play at the Mu­nic­i­pal District Of­fice and Ark­low Garda Sta­tion.

The Town Team is to make an ap­pli­ca­tion to the De­part­ment of Jus­tice and Equal­ity for fund­ing to­wards the in­stal­la­tion of a com­mu­nity-based CCTV sys­tem for the town.

The fund­ing scheme is de­signed to sup­port lo­cal com­mu­ni­ties who wish to in­stall and main­tain CCTV se­cu­rity sys­tems in their area with the aim of in­creas­ing pub­lic safety and to de­ter il­le­gal or anti-so­cial be­hav­iour.

The eleven lo­ca­tions, which in­clude the Riverwalk, The Brook, Main Street and North Quay, were se­lected fol­low­ing pub­lic con­sul­ta­tion and sub­ject to fund­ing the cam­eras could be in­stalled within the com­ing months.
