Big re­sults for lo­cal ath­letes in re­cent weeks

THERE were some su­perb per­for­mances by Wick­low ath­letes in re­cent weeks un­der the flag of Slí Cualann.

Cather­ine O’Con­nor claimed a bronze medal in the Bupa 10k race in the Phoenix Park at the end of April while Cather­ine and her team mates Ash­ling Smyth, Laura McCann claimed vic­tory in the Le­in­ster Mas­ters Road Race in both the team and county cat­e­gories. The girls were joined on that team by Jean Kennedy.

Not alone did Cather­ine O’Con­nor win the over­all event but she also fin­ished first in the O-40 cat­e­gory with Ash­ling Smyth tak­ing the ti­tle in the O-45s and Jean Kennedy storm­ing home in the O-55s.

The Slí Cualann men’s team of Ray Kenny, Gor­don Wil­liams, Bill Porter, Tony Gart­land and John Bald­win claimed a cred­i­bly fourth place in the O-50s cat­e­gory.

Last week­end saw a mas­sive crowd de­scend on Charles­land in Grey­stones for the Wick­low Track and Field Cham­pi­onships for 2018. Over 700 medals were handed out over the two days as com­peti­tors from all over the county com­peted in a host of events in beau­ti­ful weather.

Bill Porter said that he was delighted with the turnout over the week­end and wished to thank ev­ery­body who helped out in any way and he con­grat­u­lated all the com­peti­tors for their ef­forts.

Next up is the Wick­low Hospice 10k which gets un­der­way at the Bee­hive on Satur­day morn­ing at 9am.

U-14 200m: Finn Har­ris (2nd), Louis Mal­colm­son (1st), and Os­car Mal­colm­son (3rd).

U-14 Dis­cus: In third was Rachel O’Toole of Kil­coole AC, first was Han­nah Kelly of Bray Run­ners, sec­ond was Eleanor Foot of Bray Run­ners.

Camille Mad­den, Ava Fo­ley, Alex Mulc­ahy, Tara Casey, Ailbhe Gor­don from Grey­stones AC.

Cor­mac Flynn (2nd), Ciaran Roberts (1st) and Hugh Kelly (3rd) in the U-14 200m race at Charles­land.

U-15 200m: In sec­ond was Ciara Mur­ray of Bray Run­ners, first was Grainne O’Sul­li­van of Bray Run­ners, third was Louise O’Riordan of Grey­stones AC.

U-14 High Jump top three: In third was Eleanor Foot of Bray Run­ners, first was Diana Wil­liams Oshun from Aughrim AC, and sec­ond was Beth Cullen of Kil­coole AC.

Twins Os­car and Louis Mal­colm­son from Inbhear Dee who came third and first in the u-14 200m who were cel­e­brat­ing their birth­day at the Wick­low Track Cham­pi­onships at Charles­land.

Kil­coole AC’s Maya Birch won the U-12 long jump com­pe­ti­tion.

U-18 1500m run­ners Colm Flynn (Grey­stones AC) and Dy­lan Tarmey (Par­nell AC) at Charles­land in Grey­stones.
