Soc­cer stars to line out for Spirit of Wick­low fundraiser in aid of hospice

THERE is a fan­tas­tic op­por­tu­nity to meet some top class soc­cer play­ers and help raise funds for Wick­low Hospice later this year.

On Septem­ber 15 there will be a fam­ily fundraiser in aid of the hospice fea­tur­ing a match be­tween leading Euro­pean soc­cer play­ers and the Wick­low Hospice Select.

Some of the soc­cer stars tak­ing part in the Spirit of Wick­low fundraiser are Jose Kle­ber­son, Tom Boyd, Clay­ton Black­more and Wick­low’s own Gary Mes­sett.

World Cup per­for­mances led Sco­lari to declar that Kléber­son the driv­ing force be­hind Brazil’s cup-win­ning side. Tom Boyd played for Chelsea then trans­ferred to Celtic. He was cap­tain when they stopped Rangers win­ning nine league ti­tles in a row 97/98. Brian McClair of Celtic and Man Utd won four premier­ship league ti­tles, one Su­per Cup, one Euro­pean Cup Win­ners’ Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and the Scottish League and Cup.

Clay­ton Black­more joined Man Utd at 14 years of age. He was part of teams that won the Premier League, the Euro­pean Cup Win­ners’ Cup, Su­per Cup and the FA Cup.

Keith Gille­spie played with Man Utd, New­cas­tle and Black­burn and won the League Cup and Char­ity Shield.

Wick­low’s own leg­end Gary Mes­sett is the am­bas­sador for the Wick­low Hospice Select teams. He is cap­tain of the Ir­ish Cere­bral Palsy team play­ing in the Euro­pean cham­pi­onships later this month. Gary has won best player in the last three tour­na­ments and has also won two FAI in­ter­na­tional awards

The event’s main part­ner, Cir­cle K, for­merly Topaz, is of­fer­ing mem­bers of the pub­lic a chance to win free tick­ets to the match at their ‘Cir­cle K Grand Open­ing’ days, which will be tak­ing place around the county over the sum­mer months

Speak­ing about the part- ner­ship, Derek Nolan, Se­nior Direc­tor of Re­tail Op­er­a­tions at Cir­cle K Ire­land said: ‘By part­ner­ing with the Wick­low Hospice for the Euro­pean leg­ends match in Septem­ber, we are get­ting be­hind a su­perb or­gan­i­sa­tion who have worked tire­lessly fundrais­ing to build a 15-bed hospice for the peo­ple of Co Wick­low.

‘We look for­ward to wel­com­ing them to our Cir­cle K grand open­ing events in Wick­low over the com­ing weeks.’

Tick­ets for the match, which takes place at Carlisle Grounds in Bray at 3 p.m. on Septem­ber 15, are €10
