Father and son are rescued

Wicklow People (West Edition) - - NEWS -

A father and son had to be rescued last Sunday week after an inflatable dingy they were fishing in drifted out to sea.

Both Wicklow RNLI Lifeboats were launched after 5 p.m. near Brittas Bay beach.

The pair had set off from the popular beach to try their hand at some fishing. However, the wind and tide carried them off shore south of Mizzen Head.

Fortunately, the father managed to get the dinghy ashore on to an inaccessible beach after much effort.

Other family members and onlookers were unable to get down to the cliff to the beach to help the father and son.

Just after 5.30 p.m. the inshore lifeboat arrived and picked up the stranded pair.

They were transferred to the all-weather lifeboat a short time later and assessed by first aider Carol Flahive.

The two casualties were cold and shaken after their ordeal, but required no further medical assistance. They were landed safely back at Wicklow lifeboat Station at 6.30 p.m. and were picked up by relieved family members after having a hot drink.

The Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 116 was also tasked to the incident.
