Hospice gets a €6 million revamp
MINISTER for Health Simon Harris officially reopened the St Brigid’s Hospice in the Curragh after a €6 million revamp.
The hospice has been redeveloped as a centre of excellence delivering palliative care services for the people of west Wicklow and Kildare.
Part of the works included an extension, increasing bed capacity from seven to thirteen palliative care support bedrooms.
Minister Harris also referenced Wicklow Hospice at Magheramore as he opened St Brigid’s, with the amount of specialist palliative care beds increasing by 50 per cent over the past five years, with plans to increase them by a further 50 per cent over the next five years.
‘I was delighted to turn the sod on the building of the 15 bed Wicklow Hospice at Magheramore site this summer. This will be completed and ready to open in 2019. This will mean, in 2019 between St Brigid’s Hospice The Curragh and Wicklow Hospice in Magheramore, all of Wicklow will have appropriate hospice care, This was a key goal for me on becoming Minister for Health,’ said Minister Harris.
The services to be delivered from St Brigid’s Hospice include palliative home care services, a 13 bedded in-pa- tient service and day services. Each in-patient has garden views and large double doors which open directly onto their own private terrace, allowing beds to be placed outdoors if required. There are also communal gardens that patients and their families can enjoy. The services include the development of a day hospice which will provide access to a multi-disciplinary team including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work, dietetics and speech and language therapy.
‘Day services are an integral component of palliative care services providing increased capacity to assist and support patients who wish to remain in their homes,’ added Minister Harris. ‘The palliative home care services also now located in St Brigid’s provide specialist nursing care to the community I want to commend the work of the Hospice’s staff and palliative care team, and thank them for making a difference in the lives of patients and families across the region’.
