Treble joy for Kennedy and Cassin as Youths win cup

EDEL Kennedy and her defensive compatriots kept a clean sheet to help Wexford Youths scoop the FAI Women’s Cup and complete a phenomenal treble.

Katrina Parrock’s first-half strike at the Aviva Stadium was all it took to best Peamount United as Kennedy and co. kept free-scoring Amber Barrett at bay to add the FAI Cup to their League title and their National League Shield.

It was a tense affair and it looked - briefly - like Carnew’s finest had actually opened the scoring.

A free-kick was whipped in from the left flank and when United goalkeeper Naoisha McAloon spilled it, Kennedy reacted quickest to scramble the ball home but her celebrations were short-lived as Kennedy’s team-mate Rianna Jarrett was penalised for a push prior to Kennedy’s finish.

While it was celebration time (again) for Kennedy and teammate Becky Cassin, the same can’t be said for Aine O’Gorman and Claire Walsh who had the unfortunate honour of losing the FAI Women’s Cup final for the second year in a row.

Walsh played the full 90 minutes in 2017 as Cork City bested UCD Waves 1-0 but on Sunday she had to settle for 34 minutes as she replaced Lucy McCartan early in the second half.

As for O’Gorman, she missed out on last year’s final due to injury but she started on Sunday and tested Youths goalkeeper Sophie Lenehan on a few occasions but could not make the difference.

Rathrum woman Cassin was the Wexford Youths Young Player of the Year in 2015 and has enjoyed a fine season this campaign but her services were not called upon by manager Tom Elmes as she remained on the bench.

It was a frustrating afternoon for Peamount who felt that they should have had at least one penalty throughout the contest but the woman in the middle Vicki McEnery - disagreed and it was the Youths who left the Aviva Stadium with another addition to the trophy cabinet.

Edel Kennedy of Wexford Youths is tracked by Karen Duggan of Peamount United during the Continental Tyres FAI Women’s Senior Cup final in the Aviva Stadium on Sunday.
