-

THE Wicklow darts league presentation night took place last Friday in The Woodpecker, Ashford. One of Ireland’s finest players Mick McGowan was on hand to present the awards and held a thoroughly enjoyable exhibition against the local talent on the night.

The first awards handed out were in the Division 2 section. The shield competition was won by The Railway House in Rathdrum. The Woodpecker ‘B’ claimed the honours in the cup competition while The Gallery ‘B’ from Arklow proved the most consistent team topping the Division 2 league.

In Division 1 after some titanic duels between Nolans of Annagh and The Woodpecker,Ashford the north Wexford team proved too strong throughout the season to achieve a memorable double of league and cup honours.

Onto the doubles awards and local pairings came out on top as The Woodpecker’s own Eamon Doyle and Deano Doran claimed the Division 2 title while their compatriots Robbie Smith and Killian Heffernan claimed the Division 1 crown.

The singles honours saw Tinahely’s John Ennis claim the Division 2 title while one of Ireland’s rising stars Dean Finn representing The Woodpecker take the Division 1 crown. The county round robin league winner

was Shane “Logger”Byrne from Glenmalure. There was also presentations made to county manager Martin Fortune and selector Alan Dignam on the night.

Speaking to county secretary Mick Lott afterwards he would “like to thank his chairman Alan Dignam and their committee for another successful season. Also thanks to county sponsors The Woodpecker bar and restaurant, Carling and all the publicans for their continued support in hosting events throughout the county.”

All roads now lead to the Arklow Bay Hotel on July 14,15, and 16 for the Carling/Woodpecker Summer Challenge with an estimated prize fund of €10,000. Most of Ireland’s top teams and players will be competing and anyone interested can contact Mick Lott through his Facebook page or contact the Woodpecker bar.
