Great turnout at fundraising run
RUNNERS, walkers and families donned their running gear on Sunday, June 18, for a fundraising 5k run held in Wicklow town in aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital.
The run, which was organised by local woman Alison Kearns with assistance from Aoife Parle, was inspired by Alison’s four-year-old niece Carragh Funge, who is currently being treated at the hospital.
Carragh has been diagnosed with Hydrocephalus and according to Alison, through her treatment at the hospital, Carragh is making huge strides.
‘With the help of the staff at the hospital, Carragh is now walking and her speech is coming on great,’ said Alison, adding Carragh’s parents, Laura Kearns and Cormac Funge, hadn’t expected Carragh to walk.
‘We are all delighted with Carragh’s progress and we want to thank everyone who turned out for the fundraising 5k.’
A total of €725 was raised at the 5k, at which Tesco sponsored water and food.
Alison works for Tesco in Wicklow town and the supermarket has chosen Temple Street Children’s Hospital as their charity of the year.
‘I want to thank all the stewarts, Tesco, all those who turned out for the 5k and all those who helped with the tea and coffee afterwards,’ said Alison.
The winners in the men’s category were Derek Crammond (first), Paul Reilly (second) and Mick Byrne (third) while the winners in the women’s category were Sheila O’Byrne (first), Claire O’Callaghan (second) and Ashling Kirwin (third).
