Cannabis for own use

An Ark­low man found in pos­ses­sion of €200 of cannabis col­lected a fine of €300 at the District Court last week.

Jake Byrne of 19 Ch­est­nut Grove was charged with be­ing in pos­ses­sion of cannabis at Sea Road, Ark­low on Fe­bru­ary 10, 2017.

He ad­mit­ted that the drugs were for his own use and the court heard that he ac­cepted own­er­ship of it fol­low­ing a garda search of a ve­hi­cle.

So­lic­i­tor Pau­ric Hyland said that Byrne comes from a good fam­ily and has dis­as­so­ci­ated him­self from a for­mer cir­cle of friends.

Judge Kennedy im­posed a €300 fine but warned the de­fen­dant ‘you only get one bite of the cherry’ and said that he could be at risk of a cus­to­dial sen­tence if he re-of­fends.
