Enniskerry’s Jamie lands Leinster title

-

IT was a busy week for Enniskerry Boxing Club which started with Jamie Tobin taking the Leinster Novice Title in the Ringside at the National Stadium.

Jamie had to overcome a tough opponent in Sammy Lecha from Docklands to take his place in the final.

In something of a local derby Jamie beat Bray Boxing Club’s Barry Fitzpatrick in a well contested final.

It was back to the Ringside for the whole club as they held a club show versus a Dublin Selection. There were over 25 bouts ranging from an underage card to the Seniors.

It was a testament to the quality of the boxers, young and older, that the vast majority of the crowd stayed in the packed venue for the final bout late into the night.

Best Home boxer went to Chris Wall and Best Away boxer went to Paul O’Rourke of Ballybrack.

It was on then to the Wexford Box Cup which was held over Friday, Saturday and Sunday in St.Joseph’s Complex, Bishopswater.

In a fantastically organised event, Enniskerry’s Michael Moorehouse beat his English opponent John Connors 2-1 on Friday.

Cole Byrne and Michael were in action again on Saturday where both were successful, Michael overcoming a familiar opponent in local Wexford boxer St. Ibar’s Joe Whelan.

Cole overcame Charlie O’Brien of St. Colman’s in a unanimous decision. Sunday meant five finals for Enniskerry. All-Ireland champion Cole started the day for the club against another All-Ireland champion Bobbi Flood of Cabra. Cole came out on the wrong side of the decision against an excellent opponent.

Next up was European Champion Daina Moorehouse who beat Navan’s Catherine Blaney, quickly followed by Abbie Doyle who stopped her opponent Rachel Darcy of Swords.

Scott Drew picked up a W/O victory before Aidan Long won on a split decision against another local boxer Jack Murphy of St. Ibar’s in what was one of the fights of the day.

Michael Moorehouse was the last Enniskerry finalist to take to the ring against William Heazel of Tramore.

Despite taking the first round Michael visibly tired to lose out on a split decision.

All in all it was a good weekend’s work for the club with four golds and two silvers.

In its inaugural year the Box Cup jointly organised by Sacre Coeur, St. Joseph’s and St. Ibars was a great event with clubs from all over Ireland and England taking part.
