League title ‘has to be our target’ says O’Rourke
WHILE the county hurlers and footballers have been a mixed bag of positives and negatives so far in the league, the ladies football team is nothing but positive and sits alone on top of Division 4 of the Ladies Football League.
With 7-43 racked up on the scoreboard after three competitive matches along with a walkover against Kilkenny, Mick O’Rourke and his team have league honours in the crosshairs after an appearance in the league final last year and the semi-final the year before.
“When I spoke to them in the off-season that’s one thing we all set our sights on. Last year we made it to the league final and it’s a process, we hope to go one step further again and win a league title, that has to be our target,” said the Wicklow boss.
They have three matches left to play and while the date has yet to be finalised, they have a trip to Carlow pencilled in for March 18th followed by the visit of Fermanagh and a journey to Louth on the last weekend of the league.
These will be three of O’Rourke’s trickier ties, Louth and Fermanagh are second and third in the league respectively and Carlow reached the league semi-final last year. Quick to downplay the effect of the snow on training given it blanketed the entire country, O’Rourke is looking forward to the Carlow game.
“The mood is very good in the camp. The squad has bonded really well. Every single one of them not only get on well with each other but they trust each other’s ability as well. The main thing is to keep up our workrate now, we have to take every team as we meet them.”
A 100 per cent record and a new sponsor on board gives Mick O’Rourke and his squad a great chance of bringing a league title back to Wicklow in April.
