Aine calls time on her wonderful international career

-

IT was a sad day for the Republic of Ireland WNT on Monday as Enniskerry’s Aine O’Gorman announced her retirement from international duty after 100 caps.

The Enniskerry legend has played for the Girls in Green since she was 16 but has decided to step away from the scene at the age of 29 to pave way for the next generation.

Damien Duff, John O’Shea and Shay Given are just a few of the fellow centurions that O’Gorman joined as she notched up her 100th cap against Norway in June.

O’Gorman isn’t finishing tormenting defences yet though and she will hope to build on Peamount United’s League Cup Victoy (covered inside). O’Gorman penned a heart-warming open letter to confirm her retirement.

‘After 12 years of representing my country at senior level and 100 caps for the Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team, it is with great sadness and joy that I’m retiring from international football.

‘It has been an incredible journey with the team over the years and one which has been such a huge part of my life. Every time that I’ve pulled on the Ireland jersey, it has been a moment of incredible honour for both my family and I. But now, I feel it is time to step aside and let the next generation make their mark.

‘Winning my 100th cap back in June against Norway will always be one of my proudest moments, despite the result. To get to lead the team out on that special occasion was a privilege and it was an incredible milestone to reach for my country. I’ve scored 13 goals during my international career and whilst I thoroughly enjoyed scoring each one, my goal against Portugal, in particular, is the one which will always stick out.

‘Finally, I want to thank my family and friends. The support they’ve shown me over the years has been incredible and without them, all of this would not have been possible.’
