NEWS FROM THE BRIDGE CLUBS
Always good to welcome new faces to the bridge table and last Wednesday saw another player happy to try out bridge.
Last Wednesday produced many great hands and, like the previous week, a good few members bid small slams but made all 13 tricks. The special grand prize offered for bidding and making the Grand Slam remains intact. The winners on the night were Harvey and Michael Ryan followed by Ann McCarthy and her regular partner, Billy Dunne. In third place were Carol Wadden and Linda Walsh.
The free beginners class is going well and tuition commences for an hour from 6.30 p.m. until 7.30 p.m. prior to the usual club competition.
A warm welcome awaits any body wishing to try this fun and challenging card game. No booking required; just turn up on the night at 6.30 p.m. at the Dominican campus in the Ecology Centre.
The Neptune Bridge Club draw night had some very interesting pairings and some regular pairing were also drawn as can be seen from the results.
The cards were very interesting and challenging and on the North/ South side Peter McWalter and Birdie Andrews came first, second were Maria Kerr and Lyla Doyle and in third Pat and Maggie Russell (Novice players).
On the East/West side first were Joan Madden and Stasia Hagan, second were Evelyn Cullinane and Phil Fox, while Pat Kerr and John Hopkins finished third.
In first place were Stasia Hagan and Joan Madden. Second were Bernadette Rountree and Mary Flynn. In third place were Sheila Murphy and Cathal Louth. Congratulations to all the winners and Happy Birthday Mr President.
In the first competition of October, Brid Clancy and Phil Power took first place for North/South. In second were Clare Sally and Kay Plunkett and in third Maria Magee and Judy Skates and in fourth Nancy O’Brien and Catherine Halligan. East/West winners were Paddy O’Brien and Margaret Bolger. Second were Molly Byrne and Rachel Judd, in third Teresa Leahy and Marion Davis and in fourth Padraig Gleeson and Seamus Kennedy.
Friday saw Monica Brady and Kay Plunkett take first place for North/ South. Second were Nancy O’Brien and Mary Pierce and in third Ger Lenihan and Paddy O Brien.
Taking victory for East/West were Maria Magee and Rowena Brady. Maura Gaskin and Bridie Nolan were second and Gertie Fee and Jane Cronin third.
Results for Monday saw Ger Power and Eileen Sheehan with a strong lead 1st place followed by Elizabeth McCarthy and Ena Hickey in second and closely behind in third place Sheila O’Leary and Maggie Glenfield.
Wednesday was a very busy night of Bridge. First place overall went to Joe Heaslip and Jack McElhinney. Mary Wooley and Dorothy Johnson were second and Stella Doyle and Ann Looby were third.
Thursday is for beginners and improvers and first place went to Brendan Blake and Robert Downes. In second place were Robert and Timmy Doyle and in third place Gina O’Sullivan and Jim O’Sullivan.
On Friday morning first place went to Eric and Dorothy Levingston. Gwen Teevan and Dolores Heatley were second. Phyllis Kavanagh and Jane Bradshaw were third.
