Big wins at Barn­dar­rig Plough­ing Cham­pi­onship

THIRTY-FOUR com­peti­tors from all over Ire­land took part in this year’s Barn­dar­rig Plough­ing Cham­pi­onship held on Satur­day on the lands of David and Gor­don Agar.

As well as plenty of Gar­den County rep­re­sen­ta­tion, there were also con­tenders from Wex­ford, Car­low, Dublin, Louth and Roscom­mon.

The Cham­pion Class Se­nior win­ner was Pat Fur­long of Co Wex­ford. The Cham­pion Class Ju­nior win­ner was John Shortt from Co Wick­low.

Billy Don­nelly was the win­ner of the 3 Fur­row Se­nior Class cat­e­gory, while the 3 Fur­row Stan­dard Class vic­tor was John Sum­mers.

The Vin­tage Mounted Class was won by Ea­monn White. Sammy Woolm­ing­ton from Wick­low was the win­ner of an­other Vin­tage Mounted Clas­sic cat­e­gory. David Grat­ton from Co Louth fin­ished first in the Vin­tage Trailer Class and David Lev­ing­stone of Wick­low won the Vin­tage Sin­gle Fur­row Class.

The Rev­ersible Class Cham­pion was won by Tom Don­nelly from Co Wick­low. The Rev­ersible Class Stan­dard win­ner was Paul Do­ran. Kevin Do­ran of Wick­low won the Horse Class, while fel­low Wick­low manAlan Hughes was the win­ner of the Novice Class.

There are five plough­ing so­ci­eties in Wick­low – Barn­dar­rig, Carnew, Rath­down, Round­wood and En­niskerry – all of whom host their own plough­ing cham­pi­onship dur­ing the year. The Barn­dar­rig So­ci­ety dates back to the late 1930s and cur­rently in­cludes two na­tional cham­pi­ons in Paddy Doyle and Liam Hamil­ton.
