HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY

The crocus bulbs we planted in October to remember the million and a half children who perished during the Holocaust are just coming into bloom to coincide with International Holocaust Memorial Day, Sunday, January 27. To mark this occasion a group of students and staff travelled to the Mansion House to attend the Dublin commemoration. It was a very moving and dignified event with readings, survivors’ recollections, candle lighting and music. Three CCM students, Keith O’Mahony in TY, Jessica Finnigan and Michael Wright, both in fifth year, were chosen to join students from three other schools to read names from the book of scrolls, names of victims of the Holocaust.

On Friday, January 25, Second year students received their academic awards for excellence in their Christmas Examinations. To mark the occasion, students received a certificate and had a photograph taken which will be sent home to celebrate their achievement. This presented a lovely occasion to recognise and reward those students who have excelled in a particular subject. Many thanks to Mr Diamond for coordinating the distribution of these academic awards, to the Deputy-Principal, Mr Stack, and to the Year Heads and Tutors for their ongoing support of the students.

They also completed in the hang-and-plank challenges and watched a cookery demo. In CNC Router Club, students finished their most recent project last Monday. Each student made an individual door sign with their name on it. The students worked hard on this project and were very happy with their signs. Thanks to Mr Kirwin, who continues to offer this activity to the students.

The junior girls GAA team played their third match of the league against Woodbrook on Monday, January 28. The girls worked very well as a team from start to finish. They started strong and were on top by the end of the first half. However Woodbrook came back in the second half, scoring two goals in the final few minutes and winning the game. Orla Kenny, Brooke Griffin, Jade O’Brien, Ria Gregory, Mia Cowdery and Robyn Parkinson all had an outstanding game. The girls have one game left in the league.

FIRST YEAR SOCCER

The First year Soccer team beat CCA, 2-1, on Tuesday, January 29, in Greystones. The team played well and responded well after conceding an early goal.

They levelled the game after Sam Healy scored a penalty after Sidhaardh Santhosh was taken down in the box. Daniel Kavanagh made it 2-1 shortly after and the defence held out. The whole team played well with Sam Culleton, Cole Byrne and Callum Clarke standing out.
