Jerusalem Post - - NEWS - • By GIL HOFFMAN and JEREMY SHARON

Unless last-minute attempts to persuade him to reconsider bear fruit, embattled Shas MK Yigal Gueta is set to submit his resignation to Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein Sunday morning.

Gueta sent a letter of resignation to Shas chairman Arye Deri after coming under pressure from prominent rabbis to resign after speaking on the radio about attending the wedding of a gay nephew two years ago.

Efforts are still afoot within the Shas Council of Torah Sages, however, to formulate a way f0r Gueta to keep his seat while apologizing for having publicly discussed the wedding.

Sources close to Deri told The Jerusalem Post Saturday night the most likely scenario was that Gueta would indeed quit but Deri would work out a compromise before the resignation becomes official 48 hours later.

One idea is for Gueta to write a letter emphasizing that homosexual activity is forbidden by the Torah while not addressing his attendance at the wedding for which he is not willing to apologize.

Deri is set to return to Israel Sunday night following a visit to Ukraine at the invitation of the Ukrainian interior minister. Deri, in a rare move, traveled on a Ukrainian military helicopter.
