Sitting somewhere between the paradoxical and the provocative, in the Superstudio spaces Idea challenges 18 Italian and foreign designers to design a collection of objects using Ikea’s “democratic design” philosophy (featuring the same flat packaging and quick assembly aided by simple instructions). These are new and ironic pieces that have little in common with the Swedish retail store. The Idea project, the result of an intuition by Danish designer Niklas Jacob (who now lives in Marche region), applies the methods of a “design supermarket” to non-mass-market items, including Angeletti & Ruzza’s do-it-yourself spare wheel in wood Kör, Roberto Giacomucci’s Hans & Greta children’s playpen, based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, and Äktenskåp, a wardrobe by Jacob that offers a comfortable hiding place for a lover should the husband come home unexpectedly.
