ON THE HILLS AROUND FLORENCE, AN OLD FARMHOUSE HAS BEEN RENOVATED WITH STYLE AND ELEGANCE. HISTORY IN A DIALOGUE WITH THE PRESENT. words RUBEN MODIGLIANI – photos GIORGIO BARONI
The popularity of the hilly zones around Florence is a matter of beautiful landscapes. Over time, however, rural structures have been transformed into modern houses, often losing their identity completely. «When we visited the place for the first time we saw a structure that had lost its nature: it seemed like an apartment house from the 1970s», says Barbara Monica, co-founder of the studio Rosso19, which handled the renovation. «Everything had been rebuilt: staircases, floors, attics. Our first goal was to recreate the sense of a farmhouse. We avoided a philological approach: while only salvaged wood has been used for the structural beams, for an effect of authenticity, the floors are now in earthenware from Campania, which is darker than the Tuscan version. The layout has also been revised for a contemporary lifestyle: the living spaces on the ground floor flow into each other with large openings; the kitchen opens onto an informal dining zone, separated by a “peninsula” with a solid wood worktop. A large outdoor veranda faces the panorama, for use in the summer». The house has an area of about 700 m2, on multiple levels. An annex contains a gym and a flat for guests. The decor by Monica Lupi focuses on a dialogue of eras. «The owners are art collectors», she explains. «We played with mixtures to create a sense of harmony». The living area features custom upholstered pieces whose covers pick up on those of the paintings. The leitmotif of all the spaces is an elegant approach to textures and materials.
