ELLE Decor (Italy) - - English Text -

Designed in the late sixties by Marcel Breuer, this resort in the French Alps combines architecture and scenary. With a little help from site- specific works by Picasso, Vasarely and Jean Dubuffet Snowy wooded slopes surround the Flaine Hotel, a humungous concrete building that stands out starkly from its surroundings, yet manages to respect the environmental equilibrium. It was built in 1969, following the intuition of geophysicist Eric Boissonnas, who decided to team city planning, architecture and design at 1,600 metres a. s. l. The result is a macro architectural organism, large and functional, but also capable of conveying an imposing evocative charge, both through the relationship it enjoys with its surroundings and in the cosy warmth of its interiors. The buildings that make up this architectural complex are organised on three main levels, linked by two walkways and external lifts. The designer’s choice was in fact to standardise
