The third edi­tion of El­le De­cor Grand Ho­tel opens at Pa­laz­zo Mo­ran­do, de­si­gned by the in­ter­na­tio­nal Ne­ri& Hu stu­dio. For the fir­st ti­me in Ita­ly wi­th an in­te­rior de­si­gn pro­ject “We wan­ted to go beyond the tra­di­tio­nal de­fi­ni­tion of ho­tels as a se­ries of func­tio­nal ele­men­ts - lob­bies, loun­ges, re­stau­ran­ts, be­drooms - and sug­ge­st new pos­si­bi­li­ties,” ex­plain ar­chi­tec­ts Lyn­don Ne­ri and Ros­sa­na Hu, co- foun­ders of the Ne­ri& Hu stu­dio, in pre­sen­ting their In­vi­si­ble Rooms pro­ject for El­le De­cor Grand Ho­tel 2018. They we­re in­spi­red by Ita­lo Cal­vi­no’s no­vel In­vi­si­ble Ci­ties, a text that has be­co­me a cult for ge­ne­ra­tions of ar­chi­tec­ts and de­si­gners. “Ju­st as Mar­co Po­lo pre­sen­ted the va­rious ci­ties di­vi­ded in­to ca­te­go­ries to Ku­blai Khan, In­vi­si­ble Rooms di­vi­des the ho­tel in­to rooms, com­bi­ned wi­th dif­fe­rent pro­gram­ma­tic needs re­la­ted to the con­cept of ho­spi­ta­li­ty,” ex­plain the ar­chi­tec­ts. Fi­li­pi­no- born Lyn­don and Ros­sa­na from Tai­wan trai­ned in the Uni­ted Sta­tes and then foun­ded their own stu­dio in Shan­ghai. The per­fect pair to ta­ke on the pro­ject, cu­ra­ted by Li­via Pe­ral­do Mat­ton, for the third edi­tion of the El­le De­cor Grand Ho­tel. The re­fe­ren­ce to the no­vel by Cal­vi­no be­co­mes an oc­ca­sion for Ne­ri& Hu to re­crea­te a fan­ta­stic world in­si­de an an­cient Mi­la­ne­se buil­ding in the cen­tre of the ci­ty. From the loun­ge/ fo­re­st to the re­stau­rant/ na­ve for the ideal shared ban­quet, from the voyeur room to the ci­ne­ma room whe­re you can sit li­ke they used to do in Chi­ne­se cour­tyards or on far­myards in Lom­bar­dy, fi­nal­ly rea­ching the cour­tyard whe­re you can find the sky and the me­mo­ry of the ci­ty. “Com­pa­red to pre­vious edi­tions, the­re are so­me pie­ces de­si­gned spe­ci­fi­cal­ly for the event that are
