It is the story of a complicated but exhilarating restoration project and of an illuminated boat-owner who decided to share it with the “family” that is the Vele Storiche Viareggio, an association that brings together numerous enthusiasts of classic and vintage yachting and many of the extraordinary professionals one still finds in Viareggio who apply their uncommon skills to conservation and refurbishment of the “great ladies” of the sea. One of these is the Francesco Del Carlo shipyard, which for three years cared for Barbara and completed the faithful restoration begun in 1998 in Spain, before sending her back to sea this past May. Built in 1923 in England by the Camper and Nicholsons shipyard of Gosport, Hampshire, Barbara counts among her former owners Harold Francis Edwards, a well-known English yachtsman and successful regatta competitor, Baron Amaury de la Grange, and Count Robert-Jean de Vogue, general manager of Moët & Chandon and creator of the Dom Pérignon brand, who owned her until the 1960s.
