ACE! | in the town with the most courts per capita in Italy and teams that compete at the top national levels, tennis is more than a sport: it’s emotion, friendship, complicity. In short, one of a vacation’s great pleasures. But let’s hear what the pros have to say. | There is a litany of “musts” for vacationers in Forte: the schiacciatine, the spaghettini con le arselle, a stroll on the Pontile . . . and a game of tennis. It’s not a fad. It’s tradition. And in the town with the highest number of tennis courts per capita in Italy – and teams that
compete at the top national levels – we can’t ignore the importance of this sport for tourism; or the human and social relevance it often assumes: merit, largely, of instructors who have worked here “forever.” The Doyen | “I have been playing for many, many years,” Tony Bilotto, the doyen of Forte’s tennis pros, says with a self-deprecating grimace, “but I can still beat classified players! I started playing as a child, with Pietrino Polacci at his tennis club in Via XX Settembre and I’m still with the Polaccis, at Tennis Milano. Tennis is my life. It has given me good health and social standing – and the opportunity to meet famous people. How could I forget that incredible game in the early Sixties with Omar Sharif, Davis Cup finalist Rolando Del Bello, and Fausto Gardini, while Ernesto Calindri watched us from the stands with a Cynar in hand. No kidding!” he laughs, but goes on, “Tennis is often underestimated as a tourist draw, but the courts are a meeting place for the big families, just like the golf courses, and a game among friends is a true vacation rite – as are the tournaments with Forte’s great summertime names.” The VIPs | “Once upon a time we played only in the summer,” Sergio Marrai of Tennis Italia recalls, “and in winter we pros migrated to Santa Croce, to the indoor courts. Then, in the Eighties, the air-supported domes arrived here too and our world ‘inflated’. The same people who played outdoors in the summer came back in the low season to relax with their rackets. Then there’s the stimulus infused in the Seventies by Paolo Bertolucci and Adriano Panatta, and a host of VIP players. I remember Fred Bongusto, a habitué of La Bussola in Focette: every day, at 4 p.m. sharp, he showed up with the rackets he had bought in the U.S.: for us, they might as well have come from Mars! Many soccer players also love tennis. I remember the great Facchetti, who played to keep in shape, and he wasn’t alone: Galli, Donadoni, Baresi and Antognoni also adored the game.” The Tradition | Tennis in Forte is a tradition handed down from the past, we’re told by Marco Fornaroli, owner and instructor at Roma Imperiale’s Tennis Europa, which this year celebrated its fiftieth anniversary and which shares courts and clients with Monica Bertolucci (Paolo’s sister) and Guglielmo Balderi. “Our club is a privileged observatory on society and the tourist presence, families that return generation after generation,” he tells us. “Tennis is played at all levels, so it draws families; those families establish relationships and always feel at home here. Many of our Russian guests feel the same: they enjoy the attention we reserve for our clients and they bring even their littlest children. Because here, besides learning how to handle a racket, the kids also learn from their instructor how to ‘handle’ the Italian language.” The Former Pro Players | Whichever the club manager or instructor, every one of them will tell you that tennis is their life – maybe because so many come from careers in the sport. Like Sara Innocenti, who, her tournament days over, hung up her racket and turned to managing Tennis San Francesco in Vittoria Apuana. For Sara, “tennis is added value for those (many) who prefer not to roast in the sun on

the beach. It’s fun for the whole family and, once you’ve learned, it’s like riding a bike: you never forget. You can work to become a champion or just play for fun, but one thing is certain: it’s a great way to socialize.” Another veteran of professional tennis is Forte’s youngest club manager, Alessio Grasso of Tennis Roma Imperiale, who played in Serie A with Tennis Italia. “There’s no doubt that this sport is an exceptional tourist draw, thanks in part to the many top-name players we’ve seen here. We concentrate on tourists but we never forget Versilia’s own, who are the catalysts of that family atmosphere that our vacationers like so much and that kindles relationships that go well beyond the time spent together on the courts!” The Youngest Set | “Teaching tennis is a bit like working as a life coach,” we’re told by Andrea Parenti, captain of Tennis Italia in the era of its two Italian titles, who co-manages the historic Raffaelli Country Club with Filippo Grasso. “We focus on young players all year round, so that their ties to tennis don’t come undone at the end of the summer. Tennis helps them grow up. On the court you’re alone. Often it’s not easy to engineer the perfect stroke that ends the game, but you learn how and at the same time you learn how to approach other problems that life throws at you.” Added Value | The Taddei family history in tennis in Versilia is long and illustrious. “My brothers and I got started in tennis thanks to our father, who back in 1939 opened a club in Viareggio where Massimo Moratti’s father Angelo played,” explains Franco Taddei, who now, after years of teaching the game, heads Tennis Roma, which caters to the great names of Roma Imperiale. “Tennis is gaining in popularity,” adds Marco Borri, instructor at Tennis Roma and trustee for Tuscany at Federtennis. “The numbers show that young people and school groups are returning to tennis, and so is another demographic cohort, adults between twentyfive and forty, that was drawn away by other sports in the Nineties. I’m not saying that another champion wouldn’t be an added value, but even a public of 210,000 at the Italian Open in Rome is quite something! And tourism is fundamental for expanding the circle of tennis aficionados. We see it all the time: visitors who come here for just a few days, but never miss a chance for a game at the club.”
