The Palio of Siena, which re­sem­bles a form of me­dieval joust­ing, is an an­cient com­pe­ti­tion be­tween Siena’s ‘Con­trade’, or dis­tricts. Dur­ing the event, deeply hon­ored by the peo­ple of Siena, ten horses and ten riders, rep­re­sent­ing 10 of the city’s ‘Con­trade’, com­pete for the ‘Palio’, a ban­ner of painted silk. The com­pe­ti­tion takes place in the beau­ti­ful Pi­azza del Campo. The horses must run three laps around the Campo in a fierce fight for a win. In this no-holds-barred race, last­ing just over a minute, a horse can win even with­out its rider (this is very dan­ger­ous as jock­eys ride with­out sad­dles and of­ten fall off the horses’ sweaty backs).
