Af­ter twenty years, Italy won a gold medal in the men’s cox­less 4 at the World Row­ing Cham­pi­onships. At Aigue­belette, in France, the team con­sist­ing of three Neapoli­tans out of four ( bow steer Giuseppe Vi­cino, bow­man Marco di Costanzo and num­ber three Mat­teo Castaldo were born in the shadow of Ve­su­vius while Mat­teo Lodo is a na­tive of Ter­racina), gained the podium, hold­ing off chal­lenges from Aus­tralia Italy’s gold win­ning crew chal­lenged their Aus­tralian ri­vals to a duel which mid­way through the race saw the Aus­tralians tak­ing the lead.
