The Fontanelle Ceme­tery though the words of the Mani and Vul­cani as­so­ci­a­tion

he Fontanelle Ceme­tery is one of Naples’ most mys­te­ri­ous and mys­ti­cal places. , It is an ar­cane os­suary ( a place where bones are stored) lo­cated in the an­cient Rione San­ità district where the fa­mous ac­tor, Totò, was born. An im­pos­ing en­trance that was dug out of Cam­pa­nia’s char­ac­ter­is­tic yel­low tuff hill­side, leads to a huge un­der­ground grotto which houses the re­mains of ap­prox­i­mately 40,000 vic­tims, who died dur­ing the plague epi­demics that oc­curred in the 17th and sub­se­quent cen­turies. The re­mains are mostly skulls, known as ‘ ca­puzzelle’. Con­sid­ered a real ‘ hu­man ar­chive’, this mys­te­ri­ous place il­lus­trates the Neapoli­tan peo­ple’s
