Pizza, food and solidarity all feature in an event dedicated to Campania’s enogastromic offerings and to a profession that has become a symbol of Neapolitan culture
How to enjoy your stay in Naples and on the Coast & Islands
The largest open-air pizzeria in Campania overlooking the Gulf of Naples! During the first ten days of the month, the third edition of “The Space, pizza and food village” will be held at Torre del Greco. This event began as a way of bringing prestige to the profession of the “pizzaiolo”, a folkloric symbol of Neapolitan culture; this year the event extends its scope to encompass all occupations revolving around the world of gourmet food. Visitors are invited to participate in a journey targeted at rediscovering the delights of Italian culinary traditions amidst aromas, fragrances and the artisanal specialities of Campania’s enogastronomic scene. The exhibition space, extending over a surface area of approximately one kilometre, features four themed areas associated with food: a pizzeria area, including ten pizzerias, nine with woodburning ovens and one with fryers, for fried pizza and other fried specialities; a barbeque area, featuring the area’s characteristic barbeque trucks known as Car BQ; a street food area and an area dedicated to traditional cuisine. The entire space is interspersed with bars and pasticcerie, performance areas and even an interactive museum dedicated to pizza, where visitors will have a chance to learn more about the three-thousand-year-old history of this fabulous Neapolitan creation. The event is not just about pizza but also about solidarity. Every evening, at the ‘Casa Rossopomodoro for UNICEF’ area, well-known chefs will host cooking and pizza-making classes (at 7pm and at 8.30pm), the proceeds of which will go towards supporting UNICEF projects against world-wide malnutrition. The Space serves as an opportunity to learn that cuisine is not simply the answer to a daily need, but rather a creative project that enables people to experiment with different styles and approaches to eating. The beauty of the Torrese coastline will act as a stunning backdrop to an array of surprises, including a parade of pleasure craft emitting smoke signals in the shape of the Italian tricolour flag for the opening ceremony.
