Giffoni Film Festival
Now in its 46th consecutive year, the international film festival for children is once again set to enthrall its young audiences
Cilento hosts the 46th edition of the international film festival for children and teenagers
The Giffoni Film Festival, dedicated to the production of international films for children and teenagers, is currently celebrating its 46th anniversary. Based on an idea by Claudio Gubitosi, its artistic director since its inception in 1971, the Festival has contributed to re-launching a genre that is often overlooked by filmmakers, namely films for children. In fact, after starting out as a small event, it has now gained international scope. A jury of almost 4,000 individuals including children and young people judge high-quality films from all over the world, transforming the Festival into one-of-a-kind observatory at which new trends, concepts and the cultural and social evolution of younger generations is showcased. The theme of the 2016 edition is ‘Destinations’. Above all, the individual destinations of children to whom Giffoni offers a chance for enfranchisement from the parental world, a ‘safe’ kind of freedom. Children’s journey to Giffoni serves as a means of questioning and ‘finding’ themselves, a chance to express who they really are. But destinations are also collective because no-one ever travels alone, even when they might be. There is always a mentor to show them the way and, in Giffoni, their mentors are the films in competition because there is nothing better than a good movie to show you the way. And the jurors’ cases are always half empty, with little experience inside, but big enough to welcome new adventures. In order to go to beautiful destinations you need to make sure your suitcases are filled with beauty and this is Giffoni’s end goal. The program features numerous events: while many of them are only accessible to the judges, other special events are open to the public subject to reservation. For more information, we suggest visiting the event’s website listing the festival’s entire program. The image of the 46th edition of the Festival was designed by Gary Baseman, an illustrator and cartoonist, named one of the 100 most influential people in the world of entertainment by Weekly Entertainment magazine.
