THE BEST-LOVED RED CARPET
The 74th International Film Festival, the only thing hotter than a Lido beach in August, kicks off on 30 August, attracting stars of the cinema and hordes of fans, film buffs and onlookers. This year’s competition will see a line-up of 20 world premiere feature films contending either for a Golden or Silver Lion award. These coveted statues, replicating the symbol of Venice - the winged lion - are awarded respectively by an international jury for the best film and the best director.
Among the innovations announced, this year’s festival will see an unusual role reversal. For the first time in Venice, a patron rather than a patroness has been chosen to host the festival and, after an 11-year string of male presidents, this year, the position will be held by a woman. Actor Alessandro Borghi will host the opening and closing events of the 74th Venice International Film Festival 2017, while American actress Annette Bening, a four-time Oscar nominee (The Grifters, 1991; American beauty, 1999; Being Julia,2004 and The Kids Are All Right, 2010), has been named President of the jury. www.labiennale.org/en/cinema
