A MIXTURE OF THE SACRED AND THE PROFANE
Those who happen to be in Venice during the ‘Festa della
Madonna della Salute' (instituted by the Republic of Venice in 1630) will find themselves immersed in an atmosphere of profound folkloristic and religious devotion. Each year, to mark the occasion, a temporary bridge, resting on barges, is set up. The bridge crosses over the Grand Canal and connects the area of San Moisè and Santa Maria del Giglio to the Basilica designed by Longhena, to allow those participating in the procession to access the majestic church of the Madonna della Salute. A perfect meld of religion and folklore, the event is enhanced by the presence of vendors selling local sweet treats and souvenirs. Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute and surroundings.
