Two hundred and twenty years after his death, a new Museum has been dedicated to Giacomo Casanova

The famous Venetian polymath has more than one biographical surprise in store. Two hundred and twenty years after his death, a museum has been dedicated to him in his city of birth. By Elena Peverata

This is not a traditional museum with relics, artifacts and memorabilia arranged in chronological order; the Casanova Museum & Experience focuses on the Casanova ‘Experience' highlighting the innovative approach of this brand new and unusual place of cultural learning. The museum is dedicated to the persona and life of Giacomo Casanova and offers visitors a unique opportunity to acquaint themselves with this extraordinary era, a joyful time of enlightenment that disappeared shortly afterwards. To achieve this, it uses the character of Casanova, who narrates his adventures firsthand, taking visitors on an emotional, multi-media journey, allowing them to relive the atmosphere of 18th century Venice and Europe.

Casanova was a master of seduction,a libertine, writer and an adventurer, but he was also an alchemist, diplomat, philosopher and a secret agent. All the aspects and experiences of history's most famous womanizer are explored through images, sets, reconstructions, immersive rooms and interactive spaces. Visitors will find themselves conversing with Voltaire about philosophical matters, contriving political intrigues with Madame de Pompadour and listening to an opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as if these luminaries were their contemporaries. The exhibition ends in the room, which was possibly the most representative of Casanova's life: the bedroom. Here, amidst silks and damasks, visitors can admire a real 18th-century alcove. The Casanova Museum & Experience is located in Venice's 15th century Palazzo Pesaro Papafava in the sestiere of Cannaregio. >> Casanova Museum & Experience Open daily 10am-8pm
