Ja­pan PM meets with Cas­tro broth­ers on visit

HA­VANA (AP): JA­PANESE PRIME Min­is­ter Shinzo Abe has met be­hind closed doors with Cuban Pres­i­dent Raul Cas­tro and his brother Fidel Cas­tro amid grow­ing ten­sions in Asia with North Korea.

Abe did not spec­ify what kind of role Cuba might play in the re­gional cri­sis.

The prime min­is­ter wrapped up his visit to the is­land with a Fri­day news con­fer­ence. Abe noted that Cuba had a great deal of in­flu­ence with nonaligned coun­tries.

Pres­i­dent Cas­tro met last week dur­ing the Non-Aligned Sum­mit in Venezuela with Kim Yong-Nam, pres­i­dent of the North Korean par­lia­ment. Cuban state me­dia char­ac­terised the meet­ing be­tween of­fi­cials of the com­mu­nist na­tions as “fra­ter­nal”.

The visit comes amid con­cerns in Asia and else­where over a se­ries of nu­clear tests by North Korea.
