Quintet of recent winners make for fit and furious Ronron Trophy
TWELVE FIT horses are down to contest the annual renewal of the 3y-o Restricted Stakes for the Ronron Trophy over 1200 metres, the field including five recent winners.
They include ANOTHER FURY, MISTER BONES, SOY EL SENOR and the imported filly PURE AMAZEMENT. And the winner might not necessarily emerge from this group, as others such as CLASSY AVIATOR, stable companion AWESOME DESTINY, VISION and BIRD CATCHER have the credentials to win a race of this nature.
Trainer Gary Subratie, who has a knack for winning trophy races, would dearly love to win this one, having trained the outstanding American filly RONRON — in whose honour the race is being run — some years ago.
Subratie has two fancied runners in AWESOME DESTINY and CLASSY AVIATOR, who chased home the impressive CHACE THE GREAT in a fast-run 1300-metre race on August 27. Both will have their share of supporters, especially CLASSY AVIATOR with in-form jockey Aaron Chatrie sticking with the ride.
In a really tough race, my vote goes to ANOTHER FURY, who won in the smart time of 1:18.1 recently, the last six in a scorching 1:11.1.
True, the grey filly from the stables of Fitzroy Glispie faces stiffer opposition now pitted against non-winners of three, but she has impressed at exercise, galloping 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:07.0 by 1:00.2 and could be too light with 48.0kg and 2.0kg claiming apprentice Javaniel Patterson aboard.
What’s more, ANOTHER FURY has secured a good draw on the outside at post position 11 and could not have asked for anything more. She won’t be far off the early pace at the halfway stage and should take it from there.
Other firm fancies on the card are CRUCIAL APPEAL, now taking orders from trainer Dwight Chen, to win the third race for overnight allowance horses; MAN IN BLUE in the fourth, Thursday’s scorer UNBREAKABLE in the fifth, and speedy JESSIE’S FAVORITE to go all the way in the seventh.
SOY EL SENOR (left) with jockey Dane Dawkins powering to victory from MISTER BONES with Ameth Robles on-board in the fifth race on Saturday, August 20. Both will run in today’s feature race, for the Ronron Trophy.
