ALICIA BURKE IS ‘THE MODEL THEY CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF’
N A recent article published on Vogue.com, Jamaica’s newest ‘it-girl’, Alicia Burke, is called ‘The Model Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren and Dolce & Gabbana can’t get enough of.’ Burke has spent the season making key appearances at shows for the biggest designers. After getting her start through winning Pulse’s ‘Million Dollar Girl’ competition in 2015, Burke’s prowess on the international modelling scene has been on a swift, steady incline. In the early stages of her career, Burke achieved the unimaginable in landing single-girl editorial features in both Harper’s Bazaar (seven pages) and French Vogue (12 pages). Burke admits she didn’t initially realise just how far the contest would take her. “I entered the competition back home last year, I won, and things just took off from there,” Burke said. “I never imagined I would get to walk for the likes of Ralph Lauren, Dolce & Gabbana, and Stella McCartney. It’s such an honour and a dream come true.” The new model sensation noted two shining moments of the Spring-Summer showcases, as they take place during the current Paris Fashion Week. Burke said seeing herself in the pages of Vogue’s French edition and getting to try out international supermodel Gigi Hadid’s Tommy Hilfiger capsule collection before anyone else was great. “I am in love with Tommy x Gigi!” said Burke. “I would go home with any item from that collection.” With a few days of Paris Fashion Week left, Burke is looking forward to more shows, adventures, and plenty of time spent in the ateliers, but the return trip will be welcomed just as much. “I am a crybaby – tough on the outside but very soft on the inside. When I’m not modelling I’m spending time with my family, since I hardly get to do that,” said Burke. “Jamaica is such a beautiful island. It’s made up of 14 different parishes, it’s the birthplace of reggae music, and most important, it’s home.”
