Have special lock-ups for mentally ill

Jamaica Gleaner - - PEOPLE'S REPORT - ELHAM H. M. BOGLE Attorney-at-law elhambogle@gmail.com

AGAIN! THE police have fouled up again. They put Mario Deane in a cell with mentally challenged people.

After André Allison died in the Central Police Station lockup, I would have thought that the attorney general and the commissioner of police would have ensured that this would not take place again. But we never learn. I have received no response from the attorney general despite numerous letters to her and her predecessor about a reasonable settlement for the estate of André Wayne Allison.

What has to happen before we learn?

Institutions must be designated for mentally challenged inmates or accused persons where they can recover with medication and therapy.

This is the 21st century.
