UWI out of order for snub

Jamaica Gleaner - - OPINION & COMMENTARY -

THE EDITOR, Sir: I THINK it quite unfortunate that the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, would have penned such an arrogant, dismissive and rude letter to Parliament following the request by the Public Administration and Appropriations Committee to get an account of how billions of taxpayers’ dollars are spent at the institution.

University registrar William Iton’s penning of such a letter to the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Education brings into question the judgement of the vice-chancellor, who is the principal academic and administrative officer of the university. Despite a quick apology from Vice-Chancellor Sir Hilary Beckles, it is disturbing that such a critical, yet irresponsible letter could have gone out without the vicechancellor quickly pulling it back to avoid such tremendous public embarrassment.

As a citizen who continues to have respect for the university and its accomplishments, I do hope that the vice-chancellor treat this as a lesson in how he carries out his important functions and ensures that similar embarrassment does not occur under his watch.

Many of us Jamaicans are very sceptical in how our resources are being used by institutions like the UWI. ANGELLA WILSON
