BY HIS Ex­cel­lency the Most Honourable Sir PATRICK LIN­TON ALLEN, Mem­ber of the Or­der of the Na­tion, Knight Grand Cross of the Most Dis­tin­guished Or­der of Saint Michael and Saint Ge­orge, Com­man­der of the Or­der of Dis­tinc­tion, Knight of Grace of the Most Ven­er­a­ble Or­der of the Hospi­tal of Saint John of Jerusalem, Gov­er­nor Gen­eral of Ja­maica.

WHEREAS li­braries and in­for­ma­tion units are key in­sti­tu­tions that have a vi­tal role to play in the devel­op­ment of so­ci­ety:

AND WHEREAS our na­tion’s schools, aca­demic and spe­cial li­braries have served as trusted and trea­sured in­sti­tu­tions to ef­fect so­cial change through their com­mit­ment to pro­vide eq­ui­table ac­cess to in­for­ma­tion for all li­brary users:

AND WHEREAS li­braries and in­for­ma­tion sec­tor work­ers are pro­vid­ing more op­por­tu­ni­ties for com­mu­nity en­gage­ment and the de­liv­ery of new ser­vices through in­no­va­tive pro­gram­ming, mak­erspace, job-seek­ing re­sources, recre­ational ac­tiv­i­ties and the power of lit­er­acy for devel­op­ment:

AND WHEREAS The Li­brary and In­for­ma­tion As­so­ci­a­tion of Ja­maica (LIAJA), in cel­e­bra­tion of Li­brary and In­for­ma­tion Week seeks to high­light the im­por­tance of li­braries, records de­part­ments, archives, mu­se­ums and other in­for­ma­tion units, as well as to raise aware­ness of the work done by li­brary and in­for­ma­tion prac­ti­tion­ers:

AND WHEREAS the LIAJA has des­ig­nated the theme: ‘Li­braries Mat­ter: Har­ness­ing In­for­ma­tion for Na­tional Devel­op­ment’ and en­cour­ages Ja­maicans to use in­for­ma­tion and knowl­edge as im­por­tant driv­ers of eco­nomic growth:

NOW THERE­FORE, I, PATRICK LIN­TON ALLEN, Mem­ber of the Or­der of the Na­tion, Knight Grand Cross of the Most Dis­tin­guished Or­der of Saint Michael and Saint Ge­orge, Com­man­der of the Or­der of Dis­tinc­tion, Knight of Grace of the Most Ven­er­a­ble Or­der of the Hospi­tal of Saint John of Jerusalem, Gov­er­nor Gen­eral of Ja­maica, DO HEREBY PRO­CLAIM the week of Oc­to­ber 30–Novem­ber 5, 2016 as Li­brary and In­for­ma­tion Week and en­cour­age all Ja­maicans to par­tic­i­pate in the many and var­ied ac­tiv­i­ties which will take place across the is­land.
