Per­maul puts Jaguars in com­mand

LEFT-ARM SPIN­NER Veerasammy Per­maul claimed his 19th fivewicket haul in first-class cricket and be­came the fifth bowler to take 300 wick­ets in the mod­ern ver­sion of the Re­gional Four-Day Cham­pi­onship, to put Guyana Jaguars in con­trol of their open­ing-round game against Ja­maica Scor­pi­ons here yes­ter­day.

De­fend­ing their first-in­nings to­tal of 298, Jaguars bun­dled out Scor­pi­ons for an in­ad­e­quate 208 in re­ply, with Per­maul fin­ish­ing with five for 60 and fel­low left-arm spin­ner, Gu­dakesh Motie, pick­ing up four for 61.

To­gether, they com­bined to wreck the vis­i­tors in­nings, which ap­peared in great shape at 113 for one.

Opener John Camp­bell car­ried the fight for the vis­i­tors with 71 and An­dre McCarthy got 36, but once Per­maul and Motie got stuck in, wick­ets tum­bled steadily, with the last six col­laps­ing for the ad­di­tion of just 41 runs.

26 WITH­OUT LOSS

In their sec­ond turn at the crease, Jaguars were 26 with­out loss – an over­all lead of 116 head­ing into the third day at the Guyana National Stadium.

Ear­lier, cap­tain and left-arm spin­ner Nikita Miller fin­ished with four for 71 and seamer Der­val Green, three for 72, as Jaguars man­aged to add only 19 runs af­ter re­sum­ing on 279 for seven.

Left-han­der Camp­bell then gave Scor­pi­ons the ideal start, post­ing 73 for the first wicket with home­town boy Trevon Grif­fith (20) and an­other 40 for the sec­ond wicket with Devon Thomas (20).

All told, the 23-year-old West In­dies A bats­man stroked ten fours in an en­ter­tain­ing 101-ball in­nings.
