Guardian Group Foun­da­tion night runs reap suc­cess

THOU­SANDS OF en­thu­si­as­tic road-race par­tic­i­pants turned out in Kingston and Mon­tego Bay, St James, on Novem­ber 5 and Novem­ber 12, re­spec­tively, to sup­port the Guardian Group Foun­da­tion ‘Keep It Alive 5K’ night runs to raise funds for four hos­pi­tals across the is­land: the Univer­sity Hos­pi­tal of the West Indies, the Corn­wall Regional Hos­pi­tal; the Man­dev­ille Regional Hos­pi­tal, and the St Ann’s Bay Hos­pi­tal.

With a cash prize in­cen­tive, run­ners came out ready and roar­ing to com­pete. Elite run­ner Kirk Brown could not be stopped. He won the first-place prize at both events in a time of 15 min­utes and 39 sec­onds in Kingston and 15 min­utes and 13 sec­onds in Mon­tego Bay. His run­ning mate, Dwayne Gra­ham, also placed se­cond at both races. He ran 15 min­utes and 50 sec­onds in Kingston and 15 min­utes and 38 sec­onds in Mon­tego Bay. Len­ford Adams placed third in Kingston, while Larone Haye placed third in Mon­tego Bay.

The women also showed their com­pet­i­tive spirit and bat­tled for top prizes, with the first­place prize for Kingston go­ing to teenager Llori Sharpe of St An­drew High School for Girls. Ari­eta Martin placed se­cond in Kingston but im­proved in Mon­tego Bay for a first-place fin­ish, while Kar­lene Bla­grove, who fin­ished in third place in Kingston, picked up the sec­ond­place prize in Mon­tego Bay. Rusea’s High School stu­dent Ki­mone Buchanan fin­ished third in Mon­tego Bay.

Af­ter all was said and done, and the run­ners, walkers, and wheel­ers com­pleted the 5K course, they were treated to an elec­tri­fy­ing per­for­mance pack­age at the Af­ter-Race Lyme by dance­hall su­per­star Moses ‘Bee­nie Man’ Davis. Me­dia per­son­al­ity Jen­nifer ‘Jenny Jenny’ Small added her vi­brancy to the Af­ter-Race Lyme. Race pa­tron Dr Sara Lawrence presents Sylvia Grant with her first-place tro­phy for the wheelchair race at the Kingston stag­ing of the night run.
