PNP takes Angels in recount after tie

Jamaica Gleaner - - NEWS -

PATRICIA HARRIS, the incumbent People’s National Party (PNP) councillor for the Angels division in the St Catherine North Central constituency, has retained her division by defeating her Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) challenger, Senator Kerensia Morrison, at the conclusion of the final count in Bog Walk Tuesday.

After Monday’s preliminary count which saw the race that would ultimately decide who controlled the St Catherine parish in a tie, Harris gained 12 additional votes to move her final tally to 1,071, while Morrison, who also gained extra votes, ended up with 1,054.

Morrison told The Gleaner after she emerged from the counting room that she accepted the final result.

“I am going to stick to the people and give them quality representation as a councillor caretaker,” she said.

Added Morrison: “I am always of the opinion that the wish of the people is what counts, and the people have spoken.”

Meanwhile, Harris said she was honoured by the love that was shown to her by the people in the Angels division.

“I won and I am elated. This is a win for the people, not only for my party, not only for my MP or myself, but a win for the people,” she stated.

“This shows that the people look for good governance,” Harris continued.

The victory by Harris means that barring any unforeseen circumstances, incumbent Mayor Norman Scott will again be in charge of the council with a reduced majority.
