Coach/ taxi man shot and killed

Loud gunfire sent many people scampering for cover yesterday afternoon in downtown Kingston, after a gunman reportedly shot and killed a popular netball coach/ taxi man in the commercial business district.

Informatio­n reaching THE WEEKEND STAR is that the brother of a local journalist, 48- year- old Evon ‘ Bully’ Powell, of a Mark Lane address, was gunned down minutes before 5 p. m. yesterday.

assailant approached Powell in full view of bystanders, while he sat at the corner of Sutton and Duke streets.

When THE WEEKEND STAR arrived on location, Scene of Crime detectives were busy combing the area for clues.

The police also cordoned off roadways near the shooting as curious motorists slowed down to catch a glimpse of what occurred.

An eyewitness told THE WEEKEND STAR committed the act.

He said, “You want see di likkle smaddy weh kill di man to, is a likkle bwoy dweet, a dem, dem a send come do the killing nowadays. 14 and 15- year- old dem, di yute ina shorts and di gun weh him a buss bigga dan him”.

A resident who knew Powell well said, “Mi can’t believe dem kill Bully. Mi get the call and go look and couldn’t believe say a mi fren dat lay face down ina blood. It obvious dem shot him ina him head”.

THE WEEKEND STAR gathered that four shots were fired, two of which hit Powell, who died on the spot.

The eyewitness informed our news team that after the first two shots were fired, persons did not stick around to hear the last two.

Close to two hours after the fatal shooting, Powell’s body was still slumped under a stall near the spot where he was killed.

The Kingston Central police confirmed the fatal gun attack and told our news team that investigat­ions are under way.
