The Star (Jamaica) - - SPORTS - MARC STAMP

Seventeen- year- old forward Michael Seaton of DC United in the Major League Soccer ( MLS) could make his debut for the Reggae Boyz against the Soca Warriors of Trinidad and Tobago in a friendly international football match at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in St James, tonight, starting at 8: 30 p. m.

Seaton is one of three teenagers called up for the first time in the Reggae Boyz squad. The others are Khesanio Hall of St Elizabeth Technical High and Insamnia Cohen of Manchester High, both 18- year- old schoolboys.

The DC United striker, who was born in Spanish Town, represented Jamaica in the Caribbean Football Union ( CFU) Under- 17 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches in July, 2012, tallying two goals in wins against Bermuda and AntiguaBarbuda.

Seaton progressed through DC United’s Academy system, starting as a Pre- Academy player and joining the Under- 18 squad last year. He was the leading scorer ( 12 goals) for the Under- 15s and the co- leading scorer for the Under- 16s, guiding the team to a final- eight finish in the play- offs.

He signed a homegrown player contract on January 14, 2013, becoming the first player born after the launch of MLS to be signed in the league.

Winfried Schäfer, Reggae Boyz head coach, says that the friendly games against T& T tonight and four days later in that country is the start of the route to the 2018 FIFA World Cup Finals.

“We will play local players, and players playing professionally in the US, as the way forward,” Schäfer told STAR Sports.

“There is one player, 17 year- old Michael Seaton, plays in the MLS at DC United, plus two schoolboys, and also Jermaine ‘ Tuffy’ Anderson, the oldest player in the squad,” the German- born coach added.

“The training has been good, the schoolboys have attracted many, many fans to the training sessions. They are very good young players. We have to develop the right attitude,” he added.

The teenagers are among 22 players called by Schäfer and his technical staff for the two games.
