Tivoli hope to challenge for title next year

- DANIEL WHEELER STAR Writer

Tivoli Gardens’ resurgence in the second in half of the 2019-20 Red Stripe Premier League season was short-lived because of the cancellation of the season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But, their head coach Philip

Williams believes it might prepare them for a run for the title next season.

The team from west Kingston endured a rough start on and off the field as the club lost.

They struggled throughout the first round, with the team slipping dangerously into the bottom two. But the club managed to turn things around during the second and third rounds, and at the time of the cancellation, they were in fifth place with 43 points and in the play-off spots for the first time all season.

Williams believes that the late-season charge puts the club in a position go after the title next season from the start and having similar early- season struggles.

“We showed our credentials in the last two rounds. We saw a lot of things that would cause us to believe that we can challenge for titles,” Williams told STAR Sports. “There are certainly areas that we will be looking at, as coaching staff, to iron out in terms of making sure that we are consistent, and that our quality is of the highest standard at the start of the season, because that’s where we think we left a lot of work that we had to do in the second round.”
