Yee Peng sky Lantern Festival

This Thai holiday coincides with the Loi Krathong Festival. Anyone can participate by buying a paper lantern and launching it into the sky. This is a symbolic act signifying the release of misfortune and negativity and cleansing the spirit. Buddhist monks lead the ceremony for the launch, accompanying the rising lanterns with ritual chanting. In large cities the festival is celebrated with parades, street entertainments, concerts and fireworks. The largest celebrations take place in Chiang Mai, in the north of the country.
