Kajiado residents protest SGR site noise pollution

Kajiado residents have protested over noise pollution from the Ngong Hills tunnel construction site for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line from Nairobi to Naivasha.

The residents said they have had sleepless nights and their houses developed cracks due to tremors caused by dynamite used to dig the tunnel. China Road and Bridge Corporation is building the the Sh155.5 billion line that passes through a mountainous terrain necessitating building of tunnels through hills and longer bridges.

“When the project started, the government told us that there would be very few effects because the tunnel was supposed to be done through drilling,” said Joseph Choge, chair of Kibiko Community.

“As it has turned out, they are using dynamites to break the rock on the tunnel, which is creating tremors being felt 300 metres away,” added Mr Choge.

He said efforts to engage the government on matter remain unsucceful.

“As we speak today, we don’t know whether we are going to be relocated from our houses tomorrow or not,” said Mr Lemmy Muchira, another resident.
