Traders drop suit against Sh1.2bn miraa cash release

Business Daily (Kenya) - - COUNTY BUSINESS - Ken Betttion

Miraa (khat) traders have withdrawn a case in which they wanted the court to stop implementation of a Miraa Taskforce report and release of Sh1.2 billion.

Three traders suing on behalf of the Nyambene Miraa Traders Association (Nyamita) settled the matter out of court with all the respondents and presented the consent before Justice Alfred Mabeya.

The petitioners including Kimathi Munjuri, Jacob Miriti, and Naftaly Kathurima had argued that release of Sh1.2 billion as ordered by President Uhuru Kenyatta may not serve the best interest of miraa farmers, traders and residents of khat growing areas.

They had claimed the task force transformed into an implementation committee without consulting stakeholders and Meru county, which was listed as interested party.

Head of public service Joseph Kinyua, Treasury secretary and his Agriculture counterpart and the Attorney- General had been listed as respondents.
