Gov­er­nors skip Kahiga swear­ing in as 4th Ny­eri boss

Ed­ward Mu­tahi Kahiga was sworn in as the fourth gov­er­nor of Ny­eri County yes­ter­day in a cer­e­mony skipped by other county bosses.

The union­ist re­places Dr Wa­home Gakuru who died in a road crash in Mu­rang’a last week. Mr Kahiga, a for­mer teacher, took the oath of of­fice yes­ter­day in a colour­ful cer­e­mony at­tended by over 500 res­i­dents at the Ny­eri county gov­ern­ment of­fices.

How­ever, none of the other 46 gov­er­nors at­tended the cer­e­mony even af­ter promis­ing sup­port for Mr Kahiga.

But two gov­er­nors , Laikipia’s Ndiritu Muri­ithi and Ki­ambu’s Fer­di­nand Waititu, had at­tended a prayer meet­ing on Sun­day where they pledged to work with Mr Kahiga.

ICT sec­re­tary Joe Mucheru, who is chair­ing the na­tional com­mit­tee or­gan­is­ing the burial, was present yes­ter­day. Other lead­ers present in­cluded Kirinyaga Deputy Gov­er­nor Peter Ndambiri and El­gey­oMarak­wet Se­na­tor Kipchumba Murkomen. Lead­ers from Ny­eri, among them, County Assem­bly Speaker John Kaguchia, Se­na­tor Ephraim Maina and the six MPS were in at­ten­dance

Judge Jar­ius Ngaa presided over the cer­e­mony, which had been ini­tially sched­uled to take place af­ter the burial.
