Bishop Korir, Nyeri governor deaths top Google searches
News on tragedies including the recent deaths of Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru and Bishop Cornelius Korir dominated searches made on Google.
Data from the Internet giant shows that searches about the late governor Gakuru were the top trending topic on Google. “Following the accident, Kenyans searched about the family and wife of the late governor,” says Google.
Events surrounding the death of governor Gakuru were also popular searches as Kenyans shared information of the “eyewitness challenge”, a meme associated with Dennis Muigai Ngengi, a man who claimed to have witnessed the grisly accident that took the governor’s life.
Mr Ngengi gained notoriety because three weeks ago he had also appeared on television in the aftermath of a helicopter crash in Lake Nakuru claiming to be a state pilot.
“The [eyewitness challenge] meme became the fourth trending item,” says Google in a statement.
Investigations carried out since then have revealed that Mr Ngengi is not only a “serial witness” but also a serial offender having been charged with crimes in eight different instances, all under aliases, in the past.
Another top search was the burial of Bishop Cornelius Korir, who died on October 30 but was buried last weekend, which was the third trending item.
An event in which a gunman opened fire on parishioners in a church in Texas, claiming the lives of 25 people, was the fifth trending search item in Kenya.
But it was not only gloom that took Kenyans online last week. Football was the second most searched topic as fans sought information about the English Premier League, Serie A, and the World Cup qualifiers.
Kenyans also went online to look for information about Don Moen and his music.
The American gospel musician, who last week performed at the Christ is the Answer Ministries-karen, was the seventh trending search on Google.
